"I'm sorry to have caused so much inconvenience to the public and our customers and I feel very heavy." 

This is what union leader Park Hong-bae of KB Kookmin Bank said at the eve of the general strike held at the student gymnasium in Jamsil on the 7th. Negotiations between labor and management that lasted until early Tuesday broke down. As previously announced, the union staged a one-day warning strike on Tuesday. 

Unlike the gymnasium, which was crowded with about 9,000 unionized workers (assumed by the union), the atmosphere at the store was relatively calm. At 9 a.m. at Kookmin Bank's Independence Gate in Jongno-gu, Seoul, all five employees stayed at the office. On the day, the first customer in her 60s did not seem to feel uncomfortable until she got a number and sat down at the window.

The issues of the strike are performance pay and wage peak system. Labor unions may be able to achieve results such as increasing bonuses by pressuring users and delaying the entry age of wage peak system. But both Kookmin and its management are losing something more important. It is the trust of customers. 

Customers' views on the strike are cold. Among the customer responses posted on the Internet, it is easy to see comments such as "Let the banks go on strike even though they are doing well without the bank clerks," and "I hope we can restructure high-paying bankers at this time." As of 2017, the average annual salary of the bank employee was 91 million won. There is no law not to strike as a high-salaried worker, but if a customer ignores you, it is hard to avoid the "kalnal" of restructuring. A bigger problem is ahead. Kookmin Bank`s labor union warned of a second strike on the 31st and the 1st of next month. That is not the end. The union has announced a total of five strikes by the end of March. They say they will have a law-abiding struggle until 9 a.m. on time or on vacation.
